College Friends?

I'm curious for all of you current or past college students if you made new friends in college. I'm not talking about the people you talk to in class, or wave at on campus.

I was thinking today as I was leaving school that I haven't really made any friends while I've been at school. Sure, I've become buddies with people in my class and maybe get together for a study group but I never hang out with them outside of school. I suppose I could make an effort if I really wanted to, but to me it seems like a lost cause. I already have more friends than I have time to see. Why should I add more to the list?

Cultural Anthropology

Every term there seems to be one class that is going to be the death of me. This term its cultural anthropology. Sounds boring, right? Yeah, it kinda is. The worst part is that it's an 8am class. AND my teacher....well, I'll give her credit for writing her own text book about some godforsaken island called Tuvalu, in the middle of nowhere. They don't even have internet on the island. ONE computer for word processing. Goodness, I can't imagine. Okay, I know there are tons of other countries who aren't as technologically savvy as we are, but still. I can't imagine not getting my fix of Leila's blog on a regular basis or checking my email or going to myspace and checking out what crazy things my nieces are up to and not telling their parents about.

Anyway...that got off topic fast. My teacher. Yeah, it's cool. She and her husband wrote a text book about their travels to Tuvalu over a 30 year period, and she uses it as a supplementary text to the main one for the class. It's actually more interesting than the main text. BUT my teacher has these unrealistic expectations of what we do with the other one-hundred, sixty-four hours in our week. Hmm...go to my other four classes and work and do all the homework/reading for them? At any rate we have our first quiz this week. She gave out a study guide forty-one questions long! And not just answer, but explain and give examples kinda questions. Eeek! Which is what our first quiz is supposed to be like. We'll see how I do. And her definitions of a "short" paper are somewhat longer than mine. I've always thought a short paper was like two-three pages. Her definition of a short paper--which we have to do 3 of this term--is six pages. Which wouldn't be absolutely horrible, but the first one is due next week and I haven't started it. On account of the fact that I have no freaking IDEA what it is she is looking for. Sure she gave out an assignment sheet supposedly explaining what she wanted but I have no freaking idea what a "cultural text" is or how I'm supposed to analyze it. Yup, thats about where I am at the moment.

Spring term..

I am currently taking 17 credits this term, so forgive me if I drop off the blogosphere for a couple months once the term starts to get busy. I recently declared my major, psychology! I know, exciting!! So I am taking 3 psych classes ( Psychology Methods and Statistics, The Psychology Major, and Social Psychology), 1 Philosophy class (Ethics and Morals), and 1 Anthropology class (Cultural Anthropology).

The Social Psych class is an online class, so we'll see how that goes. I don't have the book yet (Zach took it last term from a different teacher and I was hoping mine would use the same book, but alas, she's not. I also found out when we did the first week's assignment (introduce ourselves to the class on the Discussion boards that I know someone else that is taking the class. Lo and behold, Kenny Monk, or Kenneth as he introduced himself, is taking it as well! To bad he isn't in Medford anymore or we could get together to do the assignments together. Rats! He just had to go and move to Washington!!

In other news, our Spring Break did not disappoint weather wise. It was cold and rainy, occasionally even snowy last week. There was only one day that was remotely nice, and it was still relatively cold. On my dayoff that I mentioned in a previous blog, we ended up nixing the Crater Lake idea (we checked the weather again and it was supposed to be 30 degrees, but feel like 7!) and ended up going to Ashland and had lunch at Munchies and then walked around Lithia Park in the rain. We had hoped that it would ease up by the time we got to the tennis courts, our planned destination, but it only kept getting worse. By the time we got there, the tennis courts looked like one huge puddle. Evan and Leila attempted to play a little, and got soaked even more in the process. We decided to head back to the car, and made a few detours along the way visiting the Japanese gardens, which had a nice little covered bench that we sat in for awhile to escape the rain, and Zach tried to chase some of the ducks at the pond. On the way back to Medford, soaked, we enjoyed cranking up a Queen: Greatest Hits cd and singing offkey all the way back. All in all it was a fun, be it a wet, experience.

Dead Week

Yes, I think school really is going to kill me. How's that for fun.

So, first, I wan't to appologize for my lack of posting...it's terrible that it has been over a month since I last posted. In my defense, I haven't hardly had any time for fun stuff since school started back up again....and it sucks.

On another note, I'll have you know, that I tried to post last week but Blogger was being stupid, and it wouldn't let me post. And then I tried again a couple nights ago and it still wouldn't let me.

I totally had something I wanted to post about, too. But now that I am finally typing, I have NO idea what it was! LOL!

Hope everyone wore maroon or orange today for the Maroon & Orange Effect Day. If you didn't, please don't forget to remember the lives lost in the Virginia Tech Tragedy on Monday. I still cannot believe something that catastrophic could happen. It could have happened at any college, even MY college. It's amazing how it takes a disaster like this to really open people's eyes and draw together. It's actually kind of sad. To think, that it takes some horrible event in order for people to draw closer together. Just like September 11, when everyone had a renewed sense of patriotism. Why do people have to have a wake-up call--in the effect of 33 lives lost, in order to realize that there are more important things than working and making money, and the "I" mentality.

So, please take a page from my book. Don't wait for disasters to open your eyes, try to keep that mentality all the time! I challenge you!

Looking back at this blog, it did not turn out anything like I had intended it. I hope it touches you like the tragedy has touched me.

so....I've been getting ragged on by a certain someone *cough, cough* Stacy *cough* that I haven't posted in almost a month. In my defense, school has been an absolute NIGHTMARE.

I'm soooo sick of dealing with people who think that having a job and living in the 'real' world is sooo much harder ya-da ya-da ya-da. Shut up! You have no idea how hard college is--with the exception of Bryan and Melina. College sucks and here's why.

Last week this is what I had due--not including working at my job at Morgan Stanley:

1. A well-practiced speech on the effects of salvage logging due on Monday
2. A mid-term over statistics that I had to majorly study for because I missed a week and a half of class when I was mondo sick. due on Tuesday
3. A rough draft on salvage logging due Wednesday.
4. A 10-12 minute presentation on Software Piracy due on Wednesday.
5. A 12 page research-paper on the effects of piracy on our society due on Wednesday.
6. A 5-6 page paper on the effects of Salvage Logging on the Biscuit fire due on Friday.

AND I had to prepare for

1. A 20-minute group presentation on Salvage logging due this coming Wednesday

So next time some all high and mighty people who think they know that the 'real' world is so much harder than college. I would dare them to go back to college full time and work part time and see just how hard it is. It's ten times more stressful.

In my criminology class we have to do a term long project...now that it is half-way through the term, I figure I should probably get started on it : ]

Ideas anyone of what I should do it on? The only requirement is that it be related to the criminal justice system in some way. I was originally thinking of doing it on piracy, but I'm having trouble finding any info on it.

In other news, guess what day is right around the corner....you guessed it.....President's day! Haha, I'm sure that's the first thing that popped into all your heads. Actually, what I meant was, Valentine's day...now I'm sure everyone first thinks of having one valentine, and spending the day being all mushy with a significant other. While I'm sure I will have my moments spent with Zach, I think that Valentines day is a good day to recognize your relationships with all of your friends and family. I'm totally planning on going out and buying those tear-out valentines that frequent elementary school classrooms and giving them to a couple of my co-workers and friends. So, just remember, you don't have to be sour.

And if I don't get a chance to thank all of you for being around......Y'all rock!

Guess what? The meteorologist never fails to disappoint. Last night he promised 2 inches of beautiful snow on the valley floor. While it did snow...I doubt we got more than half-an-inch. :(

Yup that's all I've got to say at the moment.....

Oh, except that I'm taking a Criminology course this term...and while I wasn't really looking forward to it-I took it because it fulfilled a requirement, and it fit into my schedule-I have to say, I'm really liking it so far. The teacher is pretty awesome, and the book doesn't put me to sleep! Exciting, yes? Ok, now I'm really done.

Yay! I didn't fail any of my classes. Proud of me?

What a relief. I definately had my doubts about my math class. My teacher had the habit of assigning really easy homework, and then throwing really HARD problems on the mid terms and final! Luckily I ended up surviving with a B. Which I'm completely fine with, considering I was really thinking I might have failed! Apparently I didn't do as bad on the final as I thought!

Isn't it funny how that happens quite a bit? On tests that you think you did horrible on, you actually end up doing pretty well, and on tests that you feel really good about, sometimes you don't do nearly as well as you thought?

My other grades for the term included another B in my Music History class, and an A in my writing class. Go me!! I survived my first term of college!

Hmmm...Sooo glad that the term is finally almost over. Only two more weeks, then finals, and then a whole MONTH off from school before the next term! Very excited about that, though I will still be working at good old Morgan Stanley.

How was everyone's Thanksgiving? Mine was a blast, though I was a little under the weather, so that kinda put a damper on my day. I went over to the Miles' and there was quite the crowd accounted for....TWENTY-FOUR people! The appartment was definately filled up! Three round tables to seat everyone. My oh my...the food was very 'yum-yum' (inside joke)

Soo...My college is stupid.





At registration, they took pictures for our school ID and said they would be mailing them in two weeks.

Three weeks pass, and no ID. I talk to Cindi and a few other friends who say they have already received theirs. So, I go on the website at work, and send them an e-mail asking about it.

A few days later, they get around to replying and say that it must of gotten lost in the mail. (That's it, blame the mailman. Isn't that always the case?) So she says she'll send me a new one, and put the address after that she'd be sending it to. The problem you may ask?

They messed up my address. They had it as 1923 instead of 2923. Not a big deal right? Except They have been sending information to me for the last 2 or 3 years to the correct address.

My college is stupid.

Sooo..I feel terrible. It has been a whole month since I posted. That is pathetic, and I apologize. An update:

1. My car is still sick. While I can drive it, it is still leaking a little bit of power-steering fluid, and thus, still banned from my spot in the garage and driveway. If this makes no sense to you, here is some background. My parents are somewhat anal folks and flinch at the thought of having a stained driveway. So, I must park out at the street. Tear, Tear.
2. I recently received a raise at work. Now that, my friend, is very exciting. A whole 25 cents increase!
   
3. School starts in 2 weeks. A day which I am dreading at the moment. I have to drive out to Ashland four (4) days a week once school starts. Two of those days only for one class. The big picture: Lots of gas, means lots of money down the drain for something called an education.
4. I was very dismayed to hear that Sam Goody got bought out. I just signed up for a 2-year subscription for their rewards program and it's all going down the drain because f.y.e. has their own program that only goes for ONE year. Basically, $25 down the drain. *sigh*
5. I have a stomach flu that has been going around my office. Just about everyone has had it, and now I do. I have felt nautious off and on for almost a WEEK now. I'm ready to be done with it now. In case you were wondering....
6. I've recently discovered Dee Henderson. Granted I have heard people rave on about her before, but I finally caved in when Matt gave me a copy of one of her books. Now I am hooked.
7. I'm tired of the hot weather and very much ready for fall to be here. I absolutely love the weather in fall---perfect with a zip up jacket or sweatshirt...and it's soooo beautiful.
   
8. I have been a good Sunday School kid and actually DONE my lesson before class for the last TWO weeks in a row! Go me!!
9. This last weekend, Donna, Zach, and I went down to Sacramento for the long weekend to visit Stacy, Florin, and all of the other wonderful people in Sacramento. We had an absolute blast!
10. And I am too young to have these kinds of back problems. 'Nuf said. Thinking about finding a good chiropracter-yes, it's that bad.
    

Whelp, I think that about sums it up for now.
